BTS-방탄소년단(Bangtan Sonyeondan) is a seven-member boy band in South Korea that began to be formed in 2010 and debuted as a member of Big Hit Entertainment in 2013. The Septet, composed of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook, etc., co-authors and co-produces a large portion of the band's output. Their music style, originally a hip-hop group, evolved to include a variety of genres. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social comments, deal with topics such as mental health, school-age youth's agony, sense of loss, journey to love themselves, individualism. Their works feature references to literary and psychological concepts, and include alternative space story lines. The group released several albums and performed on several world tours.
The group released its debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool in 2013. Their first 200 U.S. Billboard entries, including The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015), The Most Beautiful Moment: Young Forever (2016), and Wings (2016), helped establish their reputation as a socially conscious group of BTS. Wings became the first album by BTS, which sold 1 million copies in South Korea. As BTS entered the international music market by 2017, it led the Korean Wave to break numerous sales records in the U.S. and was the first Korean group to be certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) with its single "Mic Drop." As of 2019, BTS is known to be worth more than $4.65 billion (0.3 percent of domestic GDP) annually to the Korean economy.BTS was cited as one of the key acts to boost global music sales to $19 billion in 2018 by attracting one out of 13 foreign tourists who visited Korea.
Following the establishment of a "violence prevention campaign for myself" in partnership with UNICEF, BTS delivered a speech at the 73rd General Assembly of the United Nations, becoming the youngest person ever to win the Order of Cultural Merit for the Republic of Korea for his contribution to the spread of Korean culture and language.
